The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, has said he will continue to respect the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, despite
snubbing him at a social function on Tuesday, April 21 .
The 51st Ooni of Ife noted that he is not unsettled by Akiolu’s action, adding that he is committed to ensuring unity among traditional rulers in the land.
The foremost traditional ruler in Yorubaland made this comment during a short chat with PUNCH
through the Director Media and Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace on Wednesday.
Recall that a video showing how the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu reportedly snubbed the Ooni of Ife , Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, at a social function emerged on Tuesday night.
The 27 seconds video which has gone viral, shows the Ooni walking towards the Oba of Lagos to exchange pleasantries only for the Oba to shun the Ooni.
In the video , the Ooni stretched his hands to shake Oba Akiolu who was putting on a dark sun glass, but the Oba snubbed him, an action which has been greeted by strong criticism from Nigerians.
Reacting to the incident the Ooni of Ife said through the Director Media and Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace, the monarch said, “nobody should castigate anybody” for doing what he did because of the position he holds and because of his age… Ooni would not stop to accord his colleagues and every category of people the respect they deserve.”
“The Ooni of Ife is not ready to make any official statement over what happened between him and the Oba of Lagos. He still holds Oba Akiolu in high esteem and what happened yesterday will not stop the Ooni from holding him in high esteem.”
